What is Mocanita and what is CFF Viseu de Sus?

CFF Viseu de Sus narrow gauge is the only forestry line still working in Romania in the Water Valley (Valea Vaserului). Several steam locomotives are still operating on this line and one of these (764-211, "Mariuta") is almost 100 years old! The locomotives are used daily for both passenger and log trains.

The line was constructed in 1933 and has been operating daily ever since. People in Viseu have been working on this line for several generations and steam locomotives represented their daily means of transport up to the forest and back home at night.
There used to be a lot of steam locomotives operating but only a few have survived over the years.

Built in 1910 by Orenstein&Koppel “Mariuta” (764-211) represents today, the oldest of all working narrow gauge steam locomotives in Romania. After its restoration in 2005, Mariuta pulls both tourism and log trains to Comanu, Faina, Bardau or Poiana Novat.

The steam line in Viseu is not a museum! The timber factories and sawmills located in the area depend on the wood that steam locomotives are transporting on this line. People here work hard in the forest or on the line, as this is their way of life.
You are always welcome to visit the line and if you wish more and detailed information check this website pages. In the mean time enjoy the photos and movies taken in different seasons on CFF Viseu de Sus narrow gauge steam line.
